Jupiter and Saturn as seen on the evening of December 21st, 2020. Jupiter is 5 times, and Saturn 10 times farther away from the Sun than planet Earth, and they complete an orbit in about 11 and 29 years respectively. Although Jupiter and Saturn appear to pass each other in our sky approximately every 20 years, extremely close conjunctions of these two planets such as the one in December of 2020 are extremely rare. Conjunctions as close as this one have happened only 3 times in the last 8 centuries, and the next one will be near sunrise on March 15th, 2080. This was a lifetime opportunity to see (and record) both planets in the same field of view of a big telescope.
